I think Sterne's Tristram Shandy was the first & (at least close to) last word on modernist fiction, 150 years ahead of it's time. A Political Romance, written before Tristram, in the 'The Key' section according to one critic (who I strongly agree with but whose name I unfortunately cannot recall) anticipates Critical Theory by 200 years. So, similar to Tristram with the modernist movement, I'd go further and say that within a few pages it dramatizes, clarifies, sums up, and says the first & last word on the worthwhile points of Theory.Product details

What a funny guy! I hate to say it but to really appreciate the text the reader needs context. I recommend the Cambridge Companion to Laurence Stetne
Amusing and thought provoking, in the rambling style Sterne is known for, without the length of a Tristram Shandy. I enjoyed it.
